This guide will go into more detail about the different item qualities in Counter-Strike Global Offensive.

The arms deal update

The arms deal was a big update for CS:GO and added two things into the game:

  • You can swap these weapons in the stock, so that they appear in the buy menu. They will replace the M4A4 and the P2000. If you right click with the weapon equipped, it is going to get rid of the silencer.
  • Added cosmetic skins. These skins don't change how firearms shoot, recoil, reload or act in any way -- that the only difference is the appearance.

Some facts about weapon skins:

  • The weapon skins are purely cosmetic. A default weapon works exactly the same as a weapon with a different skin. You can use every one of these skins in any game style anyplace. Even classic competitive.
  • Some weapon skins are more rare than others (we'll explain item rarity in the future).
  • There are exceedingly rare special items which are knives. These knives are heavily altered from the default knife versions and are the animation.
The models of the guns themselves are hardly changed if at all. The skins are basically paint jobs.
  • You will find StatTrak variations of some skins, these will monitor your kills with the weapon.
  • The skins typically drop at the conclusion of a game style, when a winner is declared. In neighborhood servers, VAC has to be enabled to fall skins.
You can purchase and sell your items/skins on the steam market.
How to get weapon skins

If you play online on official Valve servers or neighborhood servers with VAC enabled, you'll have a opportunity to get weapon skins or instances to drop at the end of every match. If you get a case, you must unlock it with a key. Keys can be bought in the store/Steam marketplace. Items, cases and keys may also be traded with others and also you can but them out of the market. Drops cannot occur on offline servers.

You do not have unlimited drops, there is an internal timer that resets weekly. This means that you have X drops every week. The specific amount is unknown.

Item Rarity

There are weapon skins from the game that are less common than many others. The rarity hierarchy goes as follows:

In the most common to least common.

What can drop?

Consumer grade to classified weapon skins may drop in-game, while covert or exceedingly rare items must be unlocked from instances. The chance of a consumer grade skin dropping is much higher than obtaining a classified drop.

StatTrak versions of weapon skins exists. They will track how many kills you get with the weapon/knife. Obtaining a StatTrak version produces a weapon skin much more rare.

  • Facts about StatTrak: StatTrak weapon skins can not be a fall -- they must be acquired by opening a case (or bought from marketplace).
  • Bot kills do NOT count as a StatTrak kill and it will not increase the counter.
  • If somebody else picks up yet another players StatTrak weapon, then the digital readout will read "error" and "unknown user". Kills will not raise the counter.
