Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG developed and published by Square Enix in 2010. It is the fourteenth main entry in the Final Fantasy series and the second MMORPG after Final Fantasy XI. The game is set in the fantasy world of Eorzea, where players control a customized avatar exploring the land and facing both the Garlean Empire's invasion and the Primals, deities of the land's Beastmen tribes. Players get embroiled in a plot by a Garlean Legatus to destroy the Primals by crashing one of the planet's moons onto Eorzea.

The game had been in development under the codename "Rapture" since 2005, and was announced in 2009 for Windows and PlayStation 3. The game uses Square Enix's Crystal Tools middleware engine, which was modified to fit the game's needs. During development, the team kept many aesthetic elements from Final Fantasy XI while creating something unique. However, several problems arose during development, affecting the game's launch. Additionally, plans to bring the game to Xbox 360 fell through due to disagreements with Microsoft.

After alpha and beta testing, the game launched on September 30, 2010, but received mixed to negative reviews. While the graphics and music were praised, the gameplay, interface, and overall feeling of the game being unfinished were criticized. The backlash caused Square Enix to withdraw subscription fees, delay the PlayStation 3 version, and eventually create a new version called Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.
